In a race to be ahead of its peers, the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has started implementing Adaptive Traffic Signal Control System. This IT-enabled traffic management system, which will be commissioned in the next nine months, will be implemented by Envoys Electronics.

A total of 58 traffic signals, 14 pelican crossing and blinkers at five locations in the city will be covered under Adaptive Traffic Signal System. Most importantly, the signaling system will be run on solar power. The project will be equipped with Composite Signal Control Strategy (CoSiCoSt) technology, which has been developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).

The system will improve travel time, progressive vehicular movement through intersections, reduction in congestion, equitable distribution of green phase time, faster response to traffic conditions and emergencies, predict traffic volumes and adjust signal timings.

With the implementation of this system, authorities will be able to detect red light violation. Further, the system will be upgraded for automatic number plate recognition, variable message signs, surveillance camera for real-time emergency and incident management system. The Adaptive Traffic Signal Control System shall be integrated with other smart city modules at a Central Command Centre and provide real-time decision support. The proposed system is part of the Intelligent City Operations and Management Centre under the Pan City Proposal of Smart City project.
