The Uttar Pradesh Government is planning to set up common authority—Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA)—with an aim to upgrade daily commuting experience of urban transport users in various cities of the State. The move will not only standardize but also coordinate various modes of transport.
UMTA will also help to reduce travel time and make it less hectic an experience for daily commuters to travel in various mode of public transport in the State. UMTA would be a nodal body to ensure coordinated planning and implementation of urban transport programs and projects and integrated management of urban transport systems.
UMTA would also regulate fare for different types of city transport. It will have institutions and departments that operate various modes of urban transport like Metro, city buses, taxies, electric vehicles and other local means of transport available in the various cities.
Aware with the matter a senior official said that a proposal to set up a UMTA has been sent to the state cabinet for approval. The UMTA would be under the Uttar Pradesh government and have representation from departments, including urban development and planning, housing, Public Works Department, municipal corporations, metro rail authorities, Transport directorate, UP State Road Transport Corporation, Energy and Regional Transport Authorities.
