Delhi, in a quest to become one of the smart cities in India, is making life easier for its daily commuters. In days to come, bus commuters in Delhi can track the exact location and expected time of arrival of bus they want to travel. With Delhi government opening the transit data of buses, including live feed, the data can be accessed for free. At present, only 1,675 bus operated by Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) can be monitored as these are equipped with GPS facility. The government will add real-time data for Delhi Transport Corporation buses on the portal soon. That apart, data for metro feeder buses will be added as well.
The Open Transit Data (OTD) portal—www.otd.delhi.gov.in—provides GPS feeds of bus locations every 10 seconds. With Delhi government opening the transit data of buses, including live GPS feeds, the data can be accessed for free and used by application developers.
Through this portal, the commuters and authorities will be able to monitor in real-time if buses are stopping at bus stops, whether they are out for shedding in time and whether they are covering the whole route or not.
All these data-base are being provided in a machine-readable and globally accepted transit data standards – General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), which will enable app builders to provide transit services like estimated time arrival at bus stop, position of the bus, alert, route diversion, etc.
