A 14-nodal planned township of Mumbai established in 1971, Navi Mumbai has been ranked third among 476 cities for sanitation practices and the only city from Maharashtra to finish in the top-ten list announced by the central government under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
The Central Urban Development Ministry published the list based on 476 Class-1 cities surveyed for cleanliness levels. The parameters included the extent of open defecation, solid waste and sewage management, waste water treatment, drinking and surface water quality of water bodies, and mortality due to waterborne diseases.
Navi Mumbai, one of the largest planned townships in the world, has renowned for the clean public places, its sewage water treatment system, and solid waste management. And these ranking will further enhance the reputation of the city.
Cutting-Edge Initiatives by NMMC
The satellite township has seen radical changes, especially in last two decades Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has undertaken numerous advanced infrastructure projects including potable water supply, cleanliness, and sanitation services.
NMMC has purchased the Morbe dam that has the capacity to supply enough water for a population of 3 million. This ensures 24-hours water supply in almost all the areas reaching to 12 lakh population of Navi Mumbai, expressed by Mayor Sudhakar Sonawane. The excess water would soon be sold to neighbouring cities such as Mumbai.
Automated cleaning machines, regularly cleaning the important roads in the city, and six state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants, treating 100 per cent of the generated waste water, play a significant role in protecting the city's environment. Sonawane communicated to Hindustan Times that these plants recycles and releases almost-drinkable-quality treated water into the city's creeks, which now on would be used for landscaping purpose and also sold to those who want it for their gardens, once such example is NRI colony gardening.
While the several neighbouring cities are facing a major problem of landfill sites, Navi Mumbai took a quantum jump by developing a scientific dumping ground at Turbhe. The waste is recycled to produce fertilizer, and there are also plans to generate power. The second landfill site at Koparkhairane has been scientifically closed and converted into a huge green space – Waghmare told Mumbai Mirror. Of the 500 metric tons of solid waste generated, 90 metric tons is green waste from the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Vashi, which is converted into compost.
With modern garbage collecting vehicles are resolving the front-end problem of garbage collection and transportation – an integral part of solid waste management. The planned and coordinated transportation of garbage to the landfill site that was stuck due to various issues has been successfully resolved.
Problems to Solve
Waghmare told Mumbai Mirror that though NMMC tried to eliminate the open defecation, there are still around 5 per cent of residents who deface in the open, an issue highly worked on. There are still other issues like improving the existing facilities, last-minute connectivity, and incorporating digital technology, which are needed to be addressed as Navi Mumbai enters into this new era. NMMC is moving towards providing people-oriented services to make the city a better place to live.
