Nagaland’s capital city Kohima has recently joined Himalayan Cleanup event by undertaking Kohima Sanuorü Cleanup Campaign under the theme ‘Our Mountains deserve better.’ The Himalayan Cleanup is an annual event conducted across the Himalayan states of India to bring attention on the problem of waste in the mountains, specifically single use plastic waste. Apart from fighting plastic menace in the state, the campaign which is themed “Our mountains deserve better” also aims at assessing types plastics and brand auditing.
In Kohima, several volunteers undertook cleanup drive from various points in Tinpati, Secretariat, Kohima College area and Sanuorü River. It was led by Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) along with Kohima Village Council, Green Team, Kohima, Project 72, The Coming Generation, YARD, Nagaland Police, NSDMA, Kohima Chamber of Commerce & Industries (KCCI), Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), etc.
Earlier, KMC administrator Kovi Meyase stressed on the need to push for a behavioral change and also change in our lifestyle and our practices to protect and save the environment. He expressed hope that the campaign will not be a one day initiative but a life time prerogative for all.
