The government on Thursday released a list of 98 selected cities, across 35 states and Union Territories to be developed as 'Smart Cities' under the government's '100 Smart Cities Mission. The names of the two cities are still awaited has Jammu & Kashmir has sought more time to decided on the potential Smart City, while 12 cites have been shortlisted from Uttar Pradesh as against 13 cities allotted to the state.
The Smart City Vision was announced by the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the NDA government's first Union Budget July last year. In the 2014 election campaign, our now Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to build 100 Smart Cities by the year 2022 so as to offset the pressure on the Indian metros.
The Vision has been converted by the government into India Smart Cities Challenge - a competition designed to inspire greater creativity from municipal officials and their partners, more involvement and inspiration from citizens, and the development of proposals that will produce concrete benefits in people's lives.
These 100 shortlisted cities will compete against each other, while the ones judged with best proposals will receive funding. The remaining cities will have the chance to compete again next year.
Going ahead, the government is likely to select about 20 cities in the first round by the end of the calendar year. The competition cycle is said to run till FY18, and the government has sanctioned up to Rs 6,000 crore for the 100 Smart Cities Project. In the first year, the government will give up to Rs 200 crore, followed by Rs 100 crore every year for the next three years to each of the selected city, based on certain conditions.
