In a bid to cater to the large number of IT employees who live in the area, fresh plans for Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail have sought to extend the corridor from Madhavaram to Siruseri, from its current end at Lighthouse.
According to sources, the plans also include integrating the corridor with Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station, and reworking the other two corridors, thus extending the previous 76 km metro rail network to 88 km. This is estimated to cost Rs 500 crore per kilometre, adding up to a whopping Rs 45,000 crore.
The original 17 km corridor from Madhavaram till Lighthouse via Perambur, Ayanavaram, Purasaiwalkam, Nungambakkam High road, Gemini, Radhakrishnan Salai and Luz; will now extend to Siruseri along the Old Mahabalipuram Road.
This would be the longest corridor of Chennai Metro, if approved, and would also require new additional clearances.
