Mizoram’s state capital Aizawl has been proposed for the Smart Cities Mission by the State Level High Powered Committee for Smart Cities Mission in Mizoram (HPSC). Unlike any other state-capital, this one specifically draws more eye balls as curiosity grows over how local authorities will empower this city to be smart enough!
*as per official city website
Aizawl (pronounced ‘eye-zole’) is easily the most laid-back and unhurried among all Indian state capitals. Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is situated at about 1132 meters above sea level. It is a beautiful and bustling 112 years old city set on ridges of steep hills. Flanked on the north by the craggy peaks of Durtlang, the hill city overlooks the valley of the river Tlawng and ranges of blue hills beyond. Clinging to a near-vertical ridge by its fingernails, there’s very little to do in this city apart from soaking up its relaxed grain and peaceful way of life. Besides its breath-taking beauty, Aizawl is the centre of administration containing all important Government offices, State Assembly House and Civil Secretariat. The population of Aizawl strongly reflects the different communities of the ethnic Mizo People and their peaceful co-existence. Its strategic location, pleasant climate, hilly topography and enchanting landscape along with high concentration of govt. amenities and facilities has attracted many people from its nearby villages, giving rise to a 2.6 lakh city of today. Aizawl is today a fast growing city. The city structure today shows that more growth has taken place towards the north and north-west direction as compared to the south, along the ridge lines. The area around Chanmari, the heart of Aizawl’s residential and shopping district, is the most interesting as most tourist establishments are located in and around it. Unlike most state capitals, which are urbane, this surely packs an earthier, rustic punch of the old-world characteristic of a 112 year-old-city. Varieties of jungle products, monuments and memorials connected with legends and folklores are easily visible here. Aizawl is a beautiful place that offers plenty of tourist attractions.
The list of smart solutions for Aizawl include:
- Urban Mobility
- E- Governance
- Waste Management
- Energy Management
- Affordable Housing
- Water Supply
The main targets under the Smart City Project include, among others, adequate water supply, assured electricity supply, sanitation, solid waste management, affordable housing, robust IT connectivity and digitalization, health and education. A city which is a state –capital with more than a 100 year old legacy and one that is so bountiful with natural scenery calls for a sensitive and thoughtful move towards modernisation. It includes a tricky balance between the purest form of rustic beauty, available as nature’s best and modern infrastructure towards a more technology-ready future. Among the various consultants assigned for each city, Aizawl is assigned with Arki Techno Consultants (India) Pvt Ltd. Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister Zodintluanga speaking to media in a press conference said “The centre has already sanctioned Rs 200 lakhs for preparation of smart city proposal for Aizawl. ArkiTechno Consultants (India) Pvt. Ltd has been selected from the centre’s panel to work out the proposal.”
At times, best design – is no or less design. In the case of Aizwal, which is blessed with natural scenery, wise decisions and their implementation matter most in order to facilitate minimum interference but maximum impact!
